SPECIFIC OBJECTS FOR LIVING

This project is about specific objects for living. Inspired by Artist Donald Judd, specific objects are simple sculptural rectilinear objects with specific rules that are as much about the object as the space they create, often grouped into a series of objects, they are not concerned with referencing anything but the objects themselves. The building is designed around the idea of inhabiting these specific objects, diagrammatically organizing the program of an artist’s live/workspace into a series of specific objects. Proportions are carefully considered both in creating the forms and plan of the building. The program is subdivided into three distinct objects. First is the workspace on the first floor acting as the base object with squared proportions. On the second level, a gallery is a separate object serving as the main public access, leading into an open courtyard connecting to the living space. The living and sleeping spaces are a single object, referencing the form of the gallery extruded to create a living tower with sleeping on the top level. The forms of the gallery and living tower are conceived as equal proportioned frames connected through a single perspective view through the building. These framed objects are connected to the lower level by extruding the structure down creating the spaces for the loading and bathroom. In order to make these framed objects function, the building necessities like the kitchen, storage, and stairs are built into the structure of the thickened frames. Appearing from the exterior as minimalist sculptural objects.
