CITY SCULPTURE

According to Isamu Noguchi, ‘’sculptures’’ are not objects that belong to the ‘’space’’, as a contrary, he treats a ‘’space’’ as a ‘’sculpture’’. How would that happen? When people enter a space, the real field around them, some carefully considered objects and lines are introduced, people will generate their own understandings about this space, so the ‘‘space’’ is turned into a ‘’sculpture’’.

My main concept is to design the whole complex as a city ‘‘sculpture’’. To achieve that, I separate my design into two parts——‘‘solid’’, the buildings, and ‘’void’’, the garden. 3 separated programs stand alone and serve different functions in the complex with sculptural quality. The garden part is equally important to the buildings. It leads people through buildings and allows them to experience the relationship of ‘’objects’’ and ‘’space’’. Also, it serves as an outdoor sculpture gallery and workspace.

Gallery: the largest program with Burke goes right through it and the main entrance on the second floor from the street. The second level connects both neighbors’ galleries and also sets the gallery into two parts. Visitors can choose to go downstairs with windows open along their way allowing them to see sculptures in the garden. Also, they can go upstairs to some artwork.
Dwelling: with very limited space, it is designed with very condensed function areas. Platforms are set to different usages and connected by ladder stairs to give a protected lovely dwelling experience.
Work: the indoor working building is a cube program near the parking space, and outdoor working can happen wherever people like in the garden.
