Arch 402 – Timber Tsunami Shelter and Pavilion
The theme of this Spring 2022 Arch 402 Studio is: Extreme Environments -Timber Tsunami Shelter and Pavilion. Design for sensitive and sensible inhabitation of extreme environments is one of the greatest challenges for architecture, and a perfect situation in which to test sustainable energy, material and ecological approaches. This studio will focus on the issue of tsunami preparedness along the Pacific coast of Washington State. Students will research local and international tsunami resilience strategies, select a host community as their site, and explore timber construction systems and approaches, in order to produce design competition entries working in teams and/or as individuals.
