Celebrating International Women’s Day!

March is Women’s History Month! The CBE Diversity Council is excited to join in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in history and contemporary society.
In particular, March 8th is International Women’s Day. This is a global day of celebration to acknowledge the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and girls, and to call attention to the ongoing need for gender justice. Originating in the early 1900’s, International Women’s Day is a day to:
- celebrate the achievements of women, girls, and femme-identified people
- raise awareness about gender parity
- lobby for accelerated gender justice
- support female and femme-led organizations and efforts
The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, gender bias makes it difficult for women to thrive in their personal and professional lives. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.
Dean Renée Cheng, the first woman and also the first person of color to serve as CBE Dean commented, “In my current writing on equity in higher education, I’ve reviewed research on the potency of the dominant-culture profile of what a professor or a dean looks like. Actively mitigating bias means challenging these assumptions, which can then remove obstacles to a rich and inclusive dialogue.”
