This CBE Chronicle will center on the new UW Population Health building, The Hans Rosling Center for Population Health, situated between CBE’s Gould Hall and Architecture Hall. Ruth Baleiko (Miller Hull), Vinita Sidhu (Site Workshop), Brian Aske (Lease Crutcher Lewis), Michael McIntyre (UW Population Health Center), and moderator Ken Tadashi Oshima will discuss the project’s design and construction process, and broader implications for the space in between population health and built environments.


Ruth Baleiko, Design Partner, Miller Hull Partnership.  Ruth has devoted her expertise to spaces for teaching, learning, and discovery that weave together functional and inspirational aspects of design. She is experienced with the facilitation techniques needed to meld the technical requirements of public facilities with a broad range of stakeholder desires. With a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Ruth speaks regularly at regional and national conferences to share expertise in the design of academic spaces and currently co-chairs AIA Seattle’s Committee for Architecture of Education.


Vinita Sidhu, Principal, Site Workshop, has over 20-years’ experience designing and planning projects in the public realm. Her professional expertise includes healthcare and university campuses, K-12 schools, parks, playgrounds, and cultural landscapes. She is focused on improving community wellness through close collaboration with stakeholders, clients and integrated teams to design and build projects that achieve design excellence through implementation of a shared vision. Through thoughtful design and an emphasis on equity, she aims to connect people to nature and to each other through the artful creation of landscapes that are welcoming, immersive, and engaging.

Brian Aske, Operations Director for the general contractor, Lease Crutcher Lewis, leads market sectors utilizing integrated delivery. He is also the Past President for the Design Build Institute of America’s Northwest Region. He has experience delivering projects in all common contracting methods and enjoys pushing the envelope with cutting edge project delivery approaches. He has been a strong advocate for design-build, since his first design-build project 25 years ago. He obtained his DBIA Professional Accreditation in 2006. Brian also served on the DBIANW legislative committee who advocated in 2012 for the current Washington State legislation allowing Progressive Design-Build.

Michael MacIntyre is the Chief Strategy and Operations Officer at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. He has been part of IHME since its inception. Michael oversees strategic planning, project implementation, and relationship management with key stakeholders. Additionally, he helps guide the development of new collaborations and endeavors, investigates opportunities for business development, manages the Financial Planning and Operations team, and supports the IHME Board..
