A tribute to architect-educator Astra Zarina, Rome and the Teacher features photography, architectural models, historic maps and theoretical writing reflecting her advocacy for responsible design.
Rome photography by Balthazar Korab, who collaborated with Zarina on the 1976 book Roofscapes of Rome stretches around the gallery on 40-inch fabric prints. Astra’s work restoring the village of Civita di Bagnoregio is celebrated in the “Astra Zarina Memorial Belvedere” models and drawings by her student Steven Holl. A wall of early projects 1970–1989 shows Steven’s first works upon returning from Rome.
The UW Center for Human Rights has funding for undergraduate and graduate students across all three UW campuses, with applications opening up on February 13-March 18.
