New Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) student chapter

Hi all,

We are a group of graduate students from the Biology and Earth and Space Sciences Departments, and we are interested in starting a student chapter for the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG). The chapter will be a sub-group of the greater (and very active) PNW AWG chapter. We envision the group to be a space to foster greater connections of geoscientists across campus and connect students with professional geoscientists in the wider PNW region. AWG is an international organization devoted to enhancing the quality and level of participation of women in geosciences and to introduce girls and young women to geoscience careers. We are hoping to make our chapter unique by recruiting geoscientists at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, faculty, staff) across departments at UW, and have broadened our interpretation of AWG’s mission statement to promote women and underrepresented minorities in the geosciences, but events and membership are all-inclusive to any geoscientist who wants to participate and believes in AWG’s mission.

We are hosting an “informational, all hands meeting” the week after Thanksgiving to share our vision of how this chapter could look (e.g., outreach, mentorship program, professional geoscience mentor breakfasts, social events), solicit feedback about what you would like to gain from being part of this organization, and discuss positions that we would need to create and occupy to get it running. If you are interested in participating, fill out the form linked below with your contact information and availability to schedule the meeting.
