Staff Planner – Portland, Vancouver, or Seattle

Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is seeking a full-time Staff Project Planner to work with our planning services group in either our Portland, Vancouver, or Seattle office. As a Staff Planner, you will help improve communities via the application of your planning knowledge in the arenas of land use, environmental permitting, and community development. You can expect to be involved in supporting all aspects of project execution, including topic research and analysis, data collection and analysis, report and document writing and preparation, and communication with both internal and external partners.

As a Staff Planner, you will…

  • Have experience and interest in federal, state, and local land use and environmental permitting/entitlements and in long-range planning projects.
  • Have interest or experience in some of the following: community and economic development, brownfield redevelopment, affordable housing, grant writing and urban design
  • Assist in development of project entitlement strategies in collaboration with and/or direction of a team
  • Assist in client and regulatory agency discussions and negotiations
  • Support project planning, cost estimating, permitting, and reporting needs and assist in development and implementation of proposals, scopes, schedules, and budgets for project work
  • Work both collaboratively, in a team environment, and independently, with a willingness to solicit input from mentors.

To thrive in this role, you must have…

  • Exposure to and/or education in the principles, practices, and techniques of land use planning (e.g., bachelor’s or master’s degree in land use planning, formal training, or equivalent experience in planning or a relevant field)
  • Familiarity with the process of conducting planning studies and completing development applications; and the ability to research and prepare reports on land use, physical, social, and economic issues
  • Familiarity with researching and applying Washington and/or Oregon land use laws, regulations, and policy
  • Sound technical capabilities and organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral, written, and visual communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
