SPR 2021: ARCH 151 – Appreciation of Architecture II.

This survey course aims to cultivate informed approaches for appreciating architectural design concepts, construction techniques, formal analysis, and function. To these ends it will present major works of architecture from 1400 through today. Included buildings will be situated within their respective socio-political, cultural, and technological contexts. They will be presented throughout the term chronologically, but also thematically, as this course also aims to introduce participants to broadly applicable themes discernible from the study of architectural history that may enrich one’s exploration and experience of our existing built environments. Topics such as material usage, style, technology, and symbolism will be addressed. This course will be offered asynchronously online.
