SPR 2021: BE 211 – Global History of Built Environments II (VLPA/I&S).

This course critically examines built environments from 1000 CE through today from a global perspective. It encourages thinking about history in a transnational and trans-geographical manner that challenges the canonical approach that has generally privileged Western material and master narratives. The course is broadly structured around the concept of “time cuts” that allow for comparisons across regions and cultural formations. It will address a diverse set of sites and structures in an effort to offer a robust presentation of material from both Western and non-Western contexts. Weekly assignments connect historical material to current issues and debates regarding built environments (tourism, preservation, sustainability, historiography, etc.). This course will be taught asynchronously online.
