Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, Professor

ARCH 452 is a survey of the history of architecture in Seattle and nearby areas of the Puget Sound region. Arch 452 offers a broad overview of the design history of Seattle and its environs over roughly the last 160 years. The class will allow students to become more familiar with many of the general trends and some of the specific individuals and firms that have contributed to shaping the built environment of this region.

One objective of the course is to offer participants a framework through which to view the built environment history of this region to support future careers in design based in the Northwest. Other objectives include developing research and writing skills, and even exploring career options in architectural history or related fields.

Arch 452 is not an introductory level course. Students coming to Arch 452 must have a familiarity with the architecture of the period from 1850 to the present similar to that offered in Arch 352.

The class consists primarily of lectures illustrated with slides because a substantial amount of the material that will be covered is not available in published sources. Requirements include a midterm exam, a final exam, and a term paper.

Note: There is no required text for the course. The Course Guide with daily building/site lists will be available on Canvas. The book Shaping Seattle Architecture: A Historical Guide to the Architects (Second Edition) published in 2014 may be useful, but is not required. A series of supplemental readings will be made available on Canvas. A large part of the material that will be covered has not yet been published, so attendance will be critical to success in this class. Images from all lectures will be available on-line.
