LZ / MAYA LIN

This is a live/work studio designed for a sculptor who wants a gallery open to the public for interactive displaying while having a private workshop and living space. The design is inspired by the artist Maya Lin, who is famous for her simple and poetic design gesture and the fond of natural elements. Her works blend in seamlessly with the surrounding while leaving unforgettable impression for the visitors once they approach. This project explores the idea of cutting through and digging into the ground which creates the difference in elevation. It connects both street levels and the Burke-Gilman Trail as if it is a piece of natural landscape. The change of floor height also divides up the program in the private space with simple geometry that echos the pattern on top. Cutting and lifting the landscape make it possible for the light to go through, which ensures the comfort and privacy living underneath. At the same time it provides the experience of walking on the park not knowing it is a piece of architecture until acknowledging the hints of activity beneath. The main concept of this project is to merge into the environment while providing unique experiences for people as they approach and walk on it.
