DISRUPTING MODULARITY

The following is a proposal for a residential and exhibition space near the Fremont area in the North Lake neighborhood, for the artist Sarah Oppenheimer. While iterating during the initial stages of the design, Sarah’s artistic and architectural approach to her work was studied, and eventually, her dynamic expression of cutting through the grid of an already existing space became the leading emphasis for the remainder of the design.

Inspired by Sarah’s cutting expression, the project aims to generate a new form of architecture by initially mimicking the modularity of commercial and residential buildings found all over the North Lake neighborhood area, and then puncturing through and around the structure with different methods of circulation such as stairs, and ramps.

The final structure, then, acts as a residue of this cut: allowing for three unique interior spaces, and an exterior facade that animates the atmosphere for those walking along the Burke Gilman trail on the north, and those going to Gas Works Park on the south.

The first floor contains the gallery for exhibitions where artwork will be hung from the ceiling, placed on the angled walls, or on pedestals, as well as a storage room. The second floor is the living space with a bathroom, living area with kitchen, and the garage (This floor is untouched by the stairs). Finally, the third floor is open for studio work, and professional conversations with other artists.
