CBE Professor Faces an Electrifying Challenge

King County Metro turns to Hyun Woo “Chris” Lee Associate Professor in the Department of Construction Management to assist them in reaching their zero-carbon emissions target by 2035. Lee specializes in building and infrastructure sustainability, and construction worker health and safety and was intrigued by Metro’s need to completely overhaul their transportation infrastructure.

Assistant Professor Karen Chen awarded NASA early career investigator award

Assistant Professor Karen Chen in the Department of Urban Design and Planning is awarded the NASA early career investigator award for the program in earth science. Chen’s project will explore heat impacts on health in urban settings in the Mediterranean. Chen is also affiliated with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, and CSDE at UW

Dr. Yvette E. Pearson, Vice President, for Campus Resources and Support, University of Texas at Dallas, will join CBE and College of Engineering students to have a 1 hour open forum session. Dr. Pearson Is  Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Pearson is recognized globally for nearly 30 years in higher education, particularly for her work to advance sustainability, access and opportunity in engineering education and practice  Please register in advance.

March 20, 2024, 6:30-8:00PM, MOHAI Microsoft Lakefront Pavilion – History Café: “The Sound” Film Pilot Screening

Join writer/producer Noelani Auguston for a screening of the pilot episode of The Sound. Created by Children of the Setting Sun Productions, The Sound is a coming-of-age TV drama that follows a group of Indigenous Coast Salish teens as they travel through their ancestral waterways in a traditional canoe. Please register in advance.

“Overcoming neutrality as an organizational learning impediment” – an article that addresses the negative implications of neutrality in bureaucratic systems and public service and proposes a framework to raise the consciousness of public practitioners.

Anti-Racist Community Engagement: Principles and Practices – Series of virtual speakers and workshops that explore how students, community members, staff, and faculty put anti-racist principles into practice at college and university campuses and in communities. Next workshop is coming up on March 26th and must be registered for in advance.

Centering Indigenous Knowledge: Indigenous People and Place – A series of virtual speakers that will focus on the theme of indigenous people and place and explore people’s millennia-spanning relationships with and the significance, history, and power of place. Next event is coming up on March 21 and must be registered for in advance.

There will be a week-long gathering in Finland focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how Finnish universities integrate the SDGs into their education and research.

The Community Energy Fellowship Program (CEFP) sponsors candidates from diverse backgrounds to spend 18 months embedded in state, local, and tribal governments (Hosts) learning about and assisting in the implementation of clean energy projects and programs. Applications for the CEFP are due on March 31, 2024 by 11:59 PM.
