BP / TONY SMITH

My work is inspired by artist and sculptor Tony Smith. Tony Smith’s practice is based on abstract expressionism and simplified geometry. This building is reflective of that, combining two separate geometrical masses. By combining these masses it is heavy yet airy, with plenty of breathing room in between the spaces, used for circulation. This is a three-story structure with all three programs arranged in a hierarchical manner. The most private space is located at the highest point of the structure, the gallery space which serves its purpose to the public in the middle of the structure and the workspace for the artist below. The building is oriented towards the view of the lake which also happens to be in the direction of which the building receives its strongest source of lighting, glimmering through the Glass curtain walls on the south side of the building. There are two separate access points to the building. Public access to the gallery is achieved from a hovering sidewalk that connects all five buildings in a “store front” manner. This access point is adjacent to Northlake place and is directly above the Burke. The final access point, strictly for the artist, is located adjacent to the parking space on the first floor near Northlake way.
