SINUOUS SPACES

Sinuous Spaces is a live work space inspired by Pae White’s art. White’s work is successful at making her audience rethink ordinary or everyday objects by transforming its elements and the way it’s perceived. Similarly, I took the element of an ordinary, straight wall and transformed the shape into a weaving pattern. This created a front and back for an originally, one-sided element. By using this shape throughout the space, the walls are now capable of leading and transitioning users while being functional on both surfaces. Pae White is also known for her ability to randomize components of designs and rearrange them in a new, elaborate way. I used this system when imaging how I wanted the light to enter the building. By creating windows that use different lengths of strips of glass, as well as, glass blocks, the spaces were allowed light in an unsystematic way, while giving privacy where needed. To enter the underground gallery, the audience would use the stairs from the Burke Gillman trail. These stairs act as a funneling mechanism for people coming from the trail or the neighboring gallery. With the gallery being topped with glass, not only is there an abundance of light, but visitors will also be able to see the immensity of the two cylindric structures that act as the work and private spaces.
