VIERKANTROHRE (SQUARE TUBES)

The inspiration of this project for an artist is in honor to German minimalist artist Charlotte Posenenske’s idea of freely arranging one module of ready-mades into different forms, so the users can interact with the art and decide how to use it. In response to that, the whole project is constructed out of the same 4’ by 8’ module; that the building is constructed out of 4×8 ready-made wood panels, and the courtyard ground is finished by 4×8 concrete slabs.

Part of the project keeps the form of Charlotte’s work, Vierkantrohre Series (Square Tube Series). In the project the 4×8 panel is utilized in different ways to function as basic architectural elements: roof, walls, windows, floors; some shifting planes at certain places and placing panels at different angles creates different lighting quality and spatial moments throughout the project.

The interactivity and flexibility are reflected on the interior mobile furniture. In the living space, the sliding walls set up different arrangement of the living space; in the studio, the rotating wall forms a portable work station; and the finishing space functions on a panel which could elevate to the gallery at second floor so the visitors could admire the artist’s work in progress. All these moments are created with the same 4×8 module.

It’s a project rigidly following Charlotte’s rule of modularity, meanwhile the flexibility of modules creates unique experience of space.
